Structural engineering that gets your permit approved
Building departments ask for structural engineering whenever a project goes beyond simple prescriptive construction. That covers new homes and additions, removed walls, long spans, steel beams, retaining walls, decks, barns, commercial buildings and equipment supports.
PE Engineer provides the complete structural package: load calculations, member sizing, foundation and framing plans, connection details and general notes. Every sheet is sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state where your project is located, and drawn to the codes your jurisdiction actually enforces.
You work directly with the engineering team. We answer plan-check comments, coordinate with your architect or designer, and stay on the project until the permit is issued.
What you receive
- Structural calculations package
- Foundation and framing plans
- Beam, header and column schedules
- Connection and hold-down details
- General structural notes
- PE stamped PDF set

What a structural engineer does on a permit project
A structural engineer makes sure the building can safely carry every load it will see: its own weight, people and furniture, snow on the roof, wind pushing on the walls and pulling up on the roof, and earthquake shaking. On a permit project that work turns into three things the building department reviews.
- Calculations that show how loads are determined and how each beam, column, footing and connection is sized.
- Drawings that show the contractor exactly what to build: plans, sections, schedules and details.
- A PE seal and signature that confirms a licensed engineer takes responsibility for the design.
We produce all three, organized the way plan reviewers expect to see them.
Residential structural engineering
Most of our residential work is additions, remodels and accessory buildings. Typical projects include removing a load-bearing wall to open a kitchen, adding a second story, framing a vaulted ceiling, designing an LVL or steel beam, converting a garage into an ADU, and engineering decks, patio covers and detached garages.
For each one we check the existing structure where it matters, size the new members, design the foundation for any new point loads, and detail the connections. You get drawings your framer can build from and your inspector can sign off.

Commercial and industrial structural engineering
Commercial projects fall under the International Building Code and almost always require a design professional. We design tenant improvement framing, mezzanines and platforms, storefront and canopy structures, rooftop equipment supports, steel moment and braced frames, masonry walls and structural steel connections.
For industrial clients we engineer equipment anchorage, pipe racks, storage racks, stairs, ladders and guardrails to OSHA requirements, and foundations for tanks, skids and machinery.
Wind, snow and seismic design in every state
Design loads change dramatically from one county to the next. A carport in Florida must resist hurricane winds. A barn in Colorado must carry heavy ground snow. An addition in California must resist seismic forces. We determine site-specific loads from ASCE 7 hazard data and the local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted, so the design is right for where you are building.
Common reasons cities ask for a structural engineer
- Removing or altering a bearing wall
- Beams or spans beyond code tables
- Additions and second stories
- Steel, concrete or masonry structures
- Retaining walls over the exempt height
- Commercial or industrial buildings

Codes and standards we design to
We design to the codes and standards adopted by your state and local jurisdiction, including:
- International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC)
- ASCE 7 for dead, live, snow, wind and seismic loads
- NDS for wood construction and AISC 360 for structural steel
- ACI 318 for concrete and TMS 402 for masonry
- State codes such as the California Building Code, Florida Building Code and New York State Uniform Code
How licensing works. Engineering drawings must be sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state where your project is located. PE Engineer works with a network of state-licensed PEs, so every set is reviewed and stamped by an engineer with an active license in the state where your project is located. Their name and license number appear on the seal, exactly as your building department requires.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a structural engineer and an architect?
An architect designs the layout, appearance and code compliance of the building. A structural engineer designs the parts that hold it up: foundations, framing, beams, columns and connections, and proves them with calculations. Many permits need both, and we provide both.
Do I need a structural engineer to remove a wall?
If the wall is load-bearing, almost every building department requires engineered beam and post sizing, and often a foundation check where the new posts land. We provide the calculations and details your permit needs.
Can you stamp structural drawings in my state?
Yes. Every project is sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state where the project is located, through our network of state-licensed PEs.
How much does a structural engineer cost?
It depends on the scope. A single beam calculation costs far less than a full structural set for a new home. We give a fixed-fee quote after reviewing your project, usually the same day.
Can you answer the plan checker's structural comments?
Yes. Send the correction list and we will respond to each item, revise the drawings and calculations, and reseal the set.
Do you visit the site?
Most permit designs are completed from your plans, photos and measurements. When a site visit or inspection is required, we can arrange one through a local licensed engineer.
