Engineering for Iowa farms, towns and growing suburbs
A PE stamp in Iowa is often requested for reasons that have nothing to do with a city permit. A farmer financing a new machine shed, a co-op adding a grain bin, or a family building a shop house in an unincorporated township may face little local review, yet the lender, insurer or building supplier still wants sealed drawings and calculations. In Ankeny, Iowa City or West Des Moines, on the other hand, a full plan review is standard.
PE Engineer prepares drawings for both settings. Our Iowa work leans toward agricultural and post-frame structures, foundations for bins and tanks, and residential additions and basement remodels in the metro areas. Every set is sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in Iowa through our network of state-licensed PEs, and every set states the loads it was designed for so a reviewer or banker can see exactly what was checked.
If you are planning a pole barn or metal building, a farm shop or a commercial building on Main Street, we can carry the structural, architectural and MEP drawings under one fixed-fee quote, usually issued the same day.
How licensing works. Engineering drawings must be sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in Iowa. PE Engineer works with a network of state-licensed PEs, so every set is reviewed and stamped by an engineer with an active license in Iowa. Their name and license number appear on the seal, exactly as your building department requires.

Building codes used in Iowa
Iowa has a state building code, but it applies mainly to state-owned buildings, certain regulated facilities and local governments that choose to adopt it. Most Iowa cities adopt the International Codes by local ordinance instead, and many counties do not enforce a building code in unincorporated areas. Farm buildings used for agriculture are also generally exempt from county zoning. Statewide plumbing, electrical and energy rules still apply in most places. We confirm what your jurisdiction enforces before design starts.
- International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) as adopted by your city
- Iowa State Plumbing Code, based on the Uniform Plumbing Code
- National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as adopted by the state
- International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as adopted for Iowa
- International Mechanical Code (IMC)
- ASCE 7, NDS and AISC 360 for loads, wood and steel design
Wind, frost and flood design in Iowa
Wind is the load that shapes most Iowa structures. Open farmland gives storms a long fetch, tornadoes are a regular spring and summer threat, and the 2020 derecho showed how straight-line winds can flatten bins, barns and roofs across a wide swath of the state. We check uplift at every connection on post-frame and metal buildings, design large overhead door openings carefully, and use the exposure category that fits an open rural site rather than a sheltered suburban lot. Snow loads increase toward the north, and drifting against taller buildings or bins is common.
Frost penetrates deeply in Iowa winters, so footings, piers and posts must extend below the frost depth set by your jurisdiction. Floodplains along the Mississippi, Missouri, Cedar, Iowa and Des Moines Rivers affect many towns and farmsteads, and we can provide flood elevation and floodproofing designs where required. In western Iowa, the deep loess soils of the Loess Hills can lose strength when saturated, which calls for careful foundation and drainage detailing.
Getting an Iowa project approved
Iowa permitting ranges from full plan review in the metro areas to little or no building review in some rural counties. Cities such as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport review plans in-house, while small towns may contract inspections out. Where no permit is required, sealed drawings still give your lender, insurer and contractor a clear design to build to.
- Check with the city or county whether a building permit, zoning approval or only a lender review applies.
- Submit our sealed plans, calculations and any required forms.
- We answer comments and revise the drawings within the original scope at no extra charge.
- Build and schedule inspections, if your jurisdiction performs them.
For a bin pad, tank or dryer, see our tank and skid foundation service for what the calculation package includes.

PE stamp and permit FAQs for Iowa
Can you provide a PE stamp for my project in Iowa?
Yes. Your drawings and calculations are reviewed and sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in Iowa through our network of state-licensed PEs. The seal carries the engineer’s name and Iowa license number and the package is suitable for permit review, lenders and insurers.
My county does not require a building permit. Do I still need engineered plans?
Often, yes. Banks, insurers, building suppliers and future buyers regularly ask for sealed drawings on barns, shops and large outbuildings even where no county permit applies. A stamped design also gives your builder clear post sizes, embedment depths and connection details.
Can you design foundations for grain bins and dryers?
Yes. We design ring and slab foundations for bins, dryers and leg towers using the manufacturer’s reactions, your soil conditions and the wind loads for your site. The calculation package is sealed by an Iowa-licensed PE.
Do you design shop houses and barndominiums in Iowa?
Yes. We prepare complete plan sets for post-frame and steel-frame homes, including the architectural layout, structural design, insulation and energy details for Iowa winters, and the MEP plans a residential permit typically requires. We also detail the transition between the shop and living areas, including fire separation where your code requires it.
Which Iowa cities and counties do you work in?
All of them. We prepare drawings for Des Moines, the Quad Cities, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Sioux City and Council Bluffs, as well as farms and small towns in every county. Drawings are delivered electronically and sealed for submittal.
