Engineering for wind that never seems to stop

Anyone who has driven I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins knows Wyoming wind. Gusts strong enough to close highways shape how buildings here are braced, anchored and roofed. Then add heavy snow in the Tetons and Bighorns, deep frost across the plains and active faults in the northwest corner of the state. A PE stamp in Wyoming means the structure was designed for the conditions at your specific site, not borrowed from a plan drawn for a milder climate.

PE Engineer prepares permit-ready drawings for homeowners, ranchers, builders, energy companies and manufacturers across Wyoming. Every set is sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in Wyoming through our network of state-licensed engineers, and drawn to the code your city or county has adopted, or to current IRC and IBC standards where no local code is enforced.

Typical Wyoming projects include shops, garages and metal buildings, ranch and equine structures, new homes and additions around Cheyenne and Casper, mountain homes in Teton County, and skid foundations, equipment anchorage and access platforms for oil, gas, mining and pipeline operations in the Powder River Basin and southwest Wyoming.

How licensing works. Engineering drawings must be sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in Wyoming. PE Engineer works with a network of state-licensed PEs, so every set is reviewed and stamped by an engineer with an active license in Wyoming. Their name and license number appear on the seal, exactly as your building department requires.

Wyoming building codes we design to

Wyoming has no statewide building code enforced on all private construction. Cities and counties decide whether to adopt and enforce the International Codes, so Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Teton County run full building programs while many rural areas have none. State agencies oversee fire safety and electrical work for certain buildings, and state-owned and some public buildings follow state-adopted codes. We confirm what applies to your site before design begins.

  • International Building Code (IBC) as adopted by your city or county
  • International Residential Code (IRC) as adopted locally
  • International Fire Code and NFPA standards for fire protection
  • National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)
  • International Mechanical and Plumbing Codes where adopted
  • ASCE 7 for wind, snow and seismic loads

Design loads and hazards in Wyoming

Wind is the defining load across most of Wyoming. Open terrain puts buildings in high exposure categories, and some areas, particularly along the I-80 and I-25 corridors, see special wind conditions where local jurisdictions may require higher design speeds. Large garage and shop doors, tall walls and lightweight metal roofs all need careful attention to uplift, bracing and anchorage. Blowing snow forms deep drifts against buildings and fences, so drift design matters even where ground snow loads are moderate.

Mountain areas reverse the balance. Teton County and other high-elevation communities carry very heavy ground snow loads, and western Wyoming, including Jackson Hole and the Yellowstone region, sits in an active seismic area. Deep frost penetration applies statewide. Swelling clay soils, including bentonite-rich clays found in parts of the state, can heave slabs and foundations, so a soils report is often a good investment. Wildfire risk is significant in forested and grassland areas during dry summers, and some mountain communities apply ignition-resistant construction standards on wildland-urban interface lots.

Permit process

How the permit process works in Wyoming

Start by finding out who has jurisdiction. Inside cities such as Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette, Rock Springs and Sheridan, the city building department reviews plans and issues permits. Teton County and the Town of Jackson run their own detailed programs with strict design standards. In many rural counties, only a zoning, septic or floodplain permit may be required.

  • Contact the city or county planning office to confirm permit requirements.
  • Prepare sealed drawings sized to local wind, snow, frost and seismic values.
  • Submit for review where a program exists and respond to comments. We revise and reseal within the original scope at no extra charge.
  • Arrange state electrical permits and inspections where required.

Even without a local permit, lenders, insurers and industrial clients usually expect engineered drawings, and our tank and skid foundation designs are often required by operators before equipment is set.

FAQ

PE stamp and permit FAQs for Wyoming

Yes. Wyoming drawings are sealed by a Wyoming-licensed Professional Engineer through our network of state-licensed PEs. Each sheet carries the engineer’s seal with name and license number, and we include calculations for building departments, lenders or industrial operators who need them.

Many rural counties do not require a building permit, but engineered plans are still a smart move. Wyoming wind can tear apart an under-braced shop, and lenders and insurers often ask for sealed drawings before financing or covering a large building. Engineered plans also give your builder exact post, footing and bracing sizes to follow.

Yes. We design for the heavy ground snow loads, drifting and seismic conditions found in Teton County, and we prepare drawings to the local code and submittal standards used by Teton County and the Town of Jackson.

Yes. We review supplier drawings for your site’s wind speed, exposure and snow loads, check frames, purlins, girts, bracing and anchor bolts, and seal the design or specify the changes needed before the kit is ordered. Our third-party review and stamp service covers this work.

Yes. We design skid and tank foundations, equipment anchorage, pipe supports and access platforms for energy and mining clients in the Powder River Basin, southwest Wyoming and elsewhere, with fixed-fee quotes and rush service available.
